Tie Dye – A Nature Art Camp tradition! Bring something 100% COTTON to tie dye. Favorites over the years include bags, pillowcases, and shirts. Our process involves folding, twisting, pleating, and binding with rubber bands for resist techniques, followed by dye application. This will be the first project on Tuesday.
Stepping Stones – A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, so let’s make that first step a fun one as we create mosaic stepping stones!
Mushroom Terracotta Pots – Campers will be creating their own mushroom variety as we flip a terracotta pot and decorate it to be a mushroom.
Journey Sticks – Journey sticks are a physical representation of an adventure or a journey. Campers will be painting their journey stick with different colors and symbols as a way to remember their time at Nature Art Camp or another adventure they have been on.
Watercolor – Learn how water can impact your paints and paper as we paint a nature scene. Guest instructor Natalie Park.
Natural Paint Brush Tote Bag – Use natural paintbrushes and stamps such as twigs, grasses tied together, flowers and pinecones to decorate a tote bag.
Nature Studies & Hikes – Experience and explore the plants and animals that make their home at the DeVries Nature Conservancy. Use all of your senses to perceive details, while learning of ecology, biology and conservation. Please wear comfortable tennis shoes for hiking. No flip-flops!

Pottery on the Wheel – Turning eARTh into ART! Learn the basics of throwing on the pottery wheel and make two functional dinnerware pieces that will be glazed in a July session. Please sign-up for glazing (times listed above) at the time of class registration. Pieces will be available for pick-up about 10 days after glazing.
Hand Building Hand Bowls – Using your hands as a template, design, carve and build a bowl as unique as you!
Poured Paint Canvas – Create a unique and stunning marbled piece of art! We will be using pour paint to add swirls and lines to a canvas.
Sketching: Basic Shading Techniques – Shadows can make a drawing come to life. Learn how to add light and apply shading to your artwork.
Watercolor Batik – Using rice paper, resists and watercolors, create a stained glass effect on your drawing.
Art that Sizzles – Piece together glass to create a creature. Pieces will be fired in the kiln to fuse together and ready for pick up at glazing.

Paint Like the Masters— Draw using the inspiration of three past great masters! First, sketch like one of thee masters using your keener eye with pencil. Turn on your masterful drawing skills and the apply watercolor brush techniques after a brief demo. Find your own artistic voice whether a beginner or more advanced painter who wants to explore the next level. (Sketch and paint outdoors weather permitting.)

Paint Like the Masters Part 2: Pastels and Limited Palette— This class is open to participants not having taken Session 1. Previous students from Session 1 continue from yesterday with mixed media. We begin learning how masters used a previous sketch or two and further arranged shaped into a new composition. First, sketch like one of the masters using craypas. Then, turn on your exploration of color with a mixed media technique using acrylic paint after a brief demo. (If time permits: an acrylic panel for using acrylic paint only is also available.)

Wednesday, June 12, 1-3:30 p.m.
Apply a New Perspective in Drawing—Pretend your eyes are the camera viewing your world–first from your eye level, then refocus at “worm-level.” Special grid paper helps you look at your design from different angles using two principles of one-point and two-point perspectives. Apply a New Perspective in Drawing Part 2: Adding Objects— Students will continue drawing from yesterday’s one-point or two-point perspective and will introduce other objects into their drawings: a robot, cars…etc. Could lead to a cartoon strip (if time permits). Wednesday, June 19, 1-3:30 p.m.
Teens at the Wheel –Have you always wanted to try throwing pottery on the wheel?! Dress for mess and bring an old towel to throw over your lap. There will be a demo on creating functional pottery. This workshop includes clay, glazes, and firing. The second day, trimming pottery pieces and creating handle attachments will be taught. (required glazing workshop to finish pottery pieces). Printmaking Workshop–Creating monotypes. Using water soluble inks, unique prints, typically painterly in effect, are made by applying printing ink to a flat piece of plexiglass. The painted image is transferred to paper either by manually rubbing or using a press. A monotypes is considered a one-of-a-kind and does not employ repeatable elements. Payment is required with registration. Refund or credit will be made only for cancellations two weeks prior to the camp week. Due to the nature of the projects, we ask that our youngest campers have completed kindergarten prior to the start of camp.
