The Shiawassee Arts Council, in partnership with the Arc Shiawassee, offers an arts program for young adults with developmental disabilities called The Creative Arc. Working together SAC provides hands-on creative arts experiences to 50 students between the ages of 16 and 26 in art classes throughout the year. Disabilities represented among these students include mental retardation, epilepsy, autism and cerebral palsy. The goal of the program is that the students will enjoy the multi-media classes and will become aware of the value of artistic achievement and encourage their cultural growth. All participating students are residents of Shiawassee County.

Some art projects are designed for completion during a single session, while others are worked on during successive sessions. Students thereby gain experience of creativity not just as a single act, but also as an ongoing process that unfolds over time, requiring planning, sustained attention, and evolving ideas. Activities are conceived in a variety of media providing students with diverse creative experiences and allowing them to explore which medium they may prefer to pursue in subsequent endeavors.

The SAC offers tours during the week to groups of all sizes and ages. Learn about the Frederick Frieseke Gallery, experience the artwork in the main exhibit, and peruse the consignment galleries for art of all media. The SAC can arrange specialty tours aimed at individual ages and grade levels where students work on a project after having a guided tour. Contact the SAC for more information. We can tailor our tours and projects to fit your needs!

The Shiawassee Arts Center is teaming up with Wendy’s Restaurant in Owosso for the 20th Annual “Celebration of Youth Arts Month” during March. Students who participated in the SAC’s Home School and after-school art classes created the current exhibit of Under the Sea Paper Mache.

Students spent the month of February constructing the frame, covering it in layers of paper mache and decorating their creatures. While it was a sticky process, it challenged our young artists to think about their work in a 3-dimensional space and in a larger scale than we usually do in class.

The instructors for the project were Brian Bruff, SAC board member, Linda Ruehle, Arts Education Director and Cora Walby, Arts Education Assistant Director. All of the instructors and student artists appreciate Wendy’s for sharing their “gallery” space and supporting arts education in the community.

Participating students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade are: Jolene Arnett, Addison Balzer, Skyler Birchmeier, Michael Dwyer, Kinsley Friend, Amora Ford, Frankie Gauthier, Beverly Kneale, Hank Kneale, Adalynn Osantoski, Ella Osantoski, Owen Osantoski, Arianna Ross, Olivia Ross, Ben Sparks,  Emerson Teremi, Harvey Teremi, June Tenoff, Von Turhune, Marrah Zruna. Stop into Wendy’s for a Frosty or a Chili and view the student exhibit!
