Sculpture donor Clark Shanahan, SAC co-president Kim Renwick, artist Richard Hunt, SAC co-president Pam Early, and SAC executive director Piper Brewer at the Sunday dedication of Hunt's 18-foot high bronze abstract sculpture entitled "Winged Column", which has been installed next to the Shiawassee Arts Center.
A magnificent original public art sculpture was dedicated May 17 at the Shiawassee Arts Center. The 18-foot high bronze abstract sculpture entitled "Winged Column" has been loaned to the Arts Center by longtime SAC supporters Clark and JoAnn Shanahan. Present for the dedication were their children and grandchildren in addition to members of the SAC board of directors and staff.
The Chicago artist, Richard Hunt was also present for the special event. It has been said that "Hunt's graceful sculptures are inspired by his life experiences and his African American heritage reflecting the rhythm of poetry, the intensity of the spiritual and the enlightenment of the prophet." Indeed, his beautiful, wing-like structure in Curwood Castle Park appears well situated, seeming to rise gracefully from the banks of the rapidly flowing river.
This is the second original public art sculpture in the city of Owosso. In 2007 a bronze sculpture by Louis Marinaro entitled "Renewal" was installed near the Arts Center and donated by the family of Arthur and Helena Elliott.
